It’s officially time to start thinking about your 2020 holidays.
Will you go on a city break to Copenhagen? Perhaps spend your summer soaking up the Mallorcan sun? Or will you follow the trend and head to ever-popular Bali ? Whichever destination you choose, there are some sparkling new hotels to stay at while you’re there.
With a number of lovely hotels opening in 2020, we’ve curated a list of our favourites below.
Opening: autumn 2020
British-based Hoxton hotel group is expanding to Italy in 2020 with its Rome outpost opening in autumn. This will be the tenth hotel from the brand and the sixth opening in Europe, following on from its latest London opening in Southwark in 2019. The new hotel will boast the Hoxton’s signature design-led style in all of its 192 bedrooms, as well as in the large coffee bar, light-flooded restaurant and the beautiful outdoor terrace – which will make the most of being situated in Salario, a leafy neighbourhood just north of the city centre.

The sister property to the luxury country estates, Cliveden House and Chewton Glen, The Mayfair Townhouse is situated near London’s Green Park and is set to launch in September this year. With 172 rooms – including two Penthouse and Garden Suites – the boutique hotel will also include The Dandy Bar, event spaces and a private gym. One for literary lovers, the hotel sits on Half Moon Street surrounded by townhouses that formed the setting for Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest.

Mykonos continues its upscale revamp in 2020 with the opening of Kalesma in Ornos Bay. This suite-only property also has two luxury villas for guests to stay in, and the whitewashed collection of houses have been created to resemble a charming Mykonian village. A short walk from the beach, the hotel will feature a destination restaurant serving Greek fare and it will be the only hotel in Mykonos where each room comes with its own private pool.
Opening: autumn 2020
Opening in autumn next year, Pan Pacific’s London outpost will mark the group’s first European venture. Set in One Bishopgate Plaza, London’s new landmark tower just across from Liverpool Street Station, the 237 guest rooms and suites here have been designed by Yabu Pushelberg. A 370-person ballroom will also be available, along with studio spaces and an indoor lap pool, spa and fitness area.

Located on the iconic Sunset Strip, Pendry West Hollywood is one of California’s most anticipated openings of 2020. The glass fronted building will have interiors designed by the acclaimed Martin Brudnizki Design Studio and will be made up of 149 guest rooms including 37 suites all evoking a ‘California glamour’ theme. The much-lauded Wolfgang Puck will head up the culinary offerings here and the rooftop pool will be the place to be in the ‘always 70F’ heat.

Bordering the Tyrrhenian Sea, The Sense Experience Resort is an eco-retreat made up of 12,000 acres of natural park and pine forest. Backed on to a private beach in Tuscany’s Maremma region, the resort offers 112 guest rooms and suites all draped in Italian-designed fabrics and furnishings. Eatè restaurant will serve up delicious local fare, the outdoor pool will have a swim up bar and there will be a rotating street food menu at the on site food truck.

Set in the lush Sonoma County in California, this is the ideal getaway for wine lovers. Each of the 130 bungalow-style rooms have been designed with sustainability in mind, with furnishings made from local stone, wood and copper and private outdoor spaces with daybeds and showers. There will be two fine dining restaurants on site as well as a Spa Montage and a host of activities including winery tours, cooking classes and over 250 miles of hiking and biking trails to explore.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s much anticipated eco resort is set to open its doors in Belize in 2020. Situated on Blackadore Caye, off the Belize coast, the resort will feature a hotel, 36 bungalows and 36 villas equipped with circadian lighting and solar panels. It will also feature a research station focussed on climate change in an attempt to be the ‘world’s first truly restorative island development’.

Weaving cultural celebration with environmental conservation on Benguerra Island in Mozambique, Kisawa is a combination of 12 one, two and three-bedroom bungalows that sit on a 750 acre stretch of forest, beach and sand dunes. Each bungalow sits on its own one-acre plot and the hotel has two beach clubs, a lagoon-style swimming pool, beach bar, a library and a standalone spa specialising in traditional Chinese medicine.

Planted firmly in the US capital’s bustling Penn Quarter neighbourhood, Riggs Washington D.C. is perfectly primed for exploring the National Portrait Gallery, The White House and nearby Georgetown. Housed in a former bank, the 181-room property features playful nods to the building’s rich past with its barrel-vaulted lobby and and dreamy high ceilings. Rooms here will feature playful terracotta orange walls contrasted against striking headboards and plush furnishings. The hotel’s restaurant Café Riggs is inspired by the grand brasseries of Europe, the subterranean cocktail bar will be buzzing come nightfall and wellness fans will fawn over the hotel’s 1,800 square foot fitness centre which features Peloton bikes.

The latest addition to Marriott’s luxe W Hotels, W Bali will be located in Bali’s lush Ubud region. With a laid back vibe, this hotel will offer everything from mountaintop sunrise yoga to late night dancing under the jungle stars. With 100 guest rooms and 10 villas with private pools, the hotel will weave traditional Balinese culture and aesthetic into the design while keeping to its signature eclectic vibe. The brand’s ‘work hard, play hard’ philosophy will also be in place here, with fitness and wellness programmes, poolside DJ performances and an abundance of healthy cuisine. When you want to relax, laze by the two pools or escape to the AWAY Spa to experience a number of locally-inspired treatments.

Opening: January 2020
Munich-based hotel brand and pioneer of the ‘lean luxury’ philosophy, Ruby Hotels is set to launch its first UK property in 2020. The 76-room hotel will be located on the Southbank’s Lower Marsh and the decor will be inspired by the area’s bustling fairs and markets, with a carnival theme running throughout the hotel. Expect rich, dark tones with bright brass access and subtle stripes alongside circus drums and juggling pins.

Located within what was the century-old Central Post and Telegraph Head Office, Villa Copenhagen will hold a prime position next to the Danish capital’s famed Tivoli Gardens and the Meatpacking District. A member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, the hotel will offer a conscious approach to luxury with a focus on all things eco-friendly. Traditional Danish and international dining options will be available here and the space has been designed to promote wellbeing and sociability. They’ll be 390 rooms and suites in total. A new must-visit in the Danish capital.

In 2020, London will welcome a ‘first of its kind’ sleep-centred hotel. With the tagline ‘Your key to calm in the heart of London’s busy Piccadilly’, Zedwell has been built entirely with sleep and wellness in mind and rooms are specifically designed to limit anxiety and distractions using innovative soundproofing and a gentle circulation of filtered air. With over 700 rooms, the hotel will be located in one of London’s most central areas – Leicester Square’s Trocadero.

Six Senses has a knack for taking something beautiful and making it shiny and new without disturbing any of the original beauty. This can be seen in one of the hotel group’s newest openings, Six Senses Fort Barwara which is set to open in Rajasthan, India next year. Located inside a converted 14th century fortress and found 110km southeast of Jaipur, the hotel will preserve the original fort structure while transforming it into a 48 suite hotel. With two swimming pools, a bar and lounge, spa, fitness centre, two restaurants and a kid’s club, the hotel will be the perfect place to escape – especially the spa with its extensive Ayurveda programme.

Aman, New York will be located in the centre of Manhattan in the historic Crown Building, on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street overlooking Central Park. With 83 rooms and suites, there will be 22 private Aman Residences – the first urban residences for Aman – on the upper floors alongside a five-storey penthouse that features both indoor and outdoor swimming pools. The hotel will include its trademark Aman Spa which will fill a 2,300 square metre, three-storey space and be complete with a 25 metre pool and two spa houses. Locals will relish in the subterranean Jazz Bar, wraparound Garden Terrace overlooking Central Park and the Wine Library.

Situated on the western side of the Moremi Game Reserve in the heart of the Okavango Delta, Xigera Safari Lodge is set to be Botswana’s most luxurious new offering. Billed to open in June 2020, just in time for the summer season, there will be just 12 rooms here all reimagining the safari experience. The design here is impeccable, with the bespoke assemblage of pieces taking 18 months to produce, so expect an array of lovely artwork, furnishings and fixtures all combining to create an opulent stay. The lodge is 100 per cent solar powered and all rooms will have endless views over the floodplains.

Located in Swedish Lapland, the Arctic Bath hotel will be a floating hotel open year-round – anchored freely in the summer months and frozen into the Lule River come winter. Just south of the Arctic Circle, the Arctic Bath is a natural spa retreat with a big focus on health and wellness. The unique design reflects the nature of northern Sweden and the centre of the building boasts an open-air cold bath – at just 4 degrees in the wintertime, it’s not for the fainthearted. This escape is aimed at couples with just six cabins on the property.

This picture-perfect hotel is set to be your new favourite Indonesian hideaway for 2020. The Legian Sire is located on one of Lombok’s finest beaches, opposite the stunning Gili Islands. Sitting pretty in London’s legendary Leicester Square, the capital is welcoming a luxury addition to its West End scene. Locals will delight in The Londoner’s new rooftop bar as well as the urban spa deep in the basement. Décor is expected to be vibrant in the public areas with more calming rooms. With 15 levels boasting 350 rooms and 15 suites, the hotel will be expansive and a charming new addition to London’s hotel scene.

The first international hotel brand to operate in the Faroe Islands, the Hilton Garden Inn Faroe Islands is set to open in the second half of 2020. Within walking distance of the harbour, the hotel will boast sea views and will place an emphasis on sustainability. With 131 rooms, a restaurant, shop, fitness centre and a spa, it’s certainly one to know when visiting these wild islands between Norway and Iceland.

Set to open in January 2020, Six Senses Shaharut will take up residence in the Israeli Negev Desert. Perched on a dramatic cliff with panoramic views of the desert, the hotel will offers suites and villas with the villas built from local rocks and pigments. The hotel, inspired by the natural landscape, will also utilise regional cacti and indigenous desert blooms as well as sourcing furnishings from local artists. The restaurant will be accompanied by a tented Bedouin dining experience and the spa will house a Six Senses signature Alchemy Bar. There will also be an indoor and outdoor pool, alongside a gym, yoga studio, nail bar, open-air cinema, kid’s club and a fully-functioning camel stables. Naturally, camel safaris are on offer.

One of the most exclusive areas in Paris – the famous ‘Triangle d’Or’ – is soon to be home to the Bvlgari Hotel Paris. The eighth hotel in the brand’s portfolio, it will have 76 rooms, most of them suites, and will also house a spa with a 25-metre pool, along with a Bvlgari restaurant and courtyard garden.

One of Europe’s most exciting new hotels for 2020, Can Ferrereta will open just in time for next year’s summer season on the ever-popular Spanish island of Mallorca. Located in the quaint, rural town of Santanyí, the hotel is set within a charming 17th century building with 31 individually designed suites and rooms. Home to a Mediterranean restaurant with a Mallorcan patio, the hotel will also boast two bars, a swimming pool, gym and hammam spa.

With Inhabit’s first London hotel in Southwick Street opening in late September 2019, it is already planning its second outpost for late 2020. Set in Cleveland Square in Bayswater, the wellness-focussed hotel will share a similar ethos to its sibling, inspiring good habits, providing ‘life-enhancing’ hospitality and promoting mindful travel.

While the Bawah Reserve has been open since 2017, this eco-friendly resort located between Malaysia and Borneo is introducing new accommodation on the previously untouched island of Elang for 2020. The sustainably-minded suites on Elang have been created by Singaporean designer Sim Boon Yang, with interiors made from recycled natural materials and a number of the suites having private pools and direct sea access. Spend days here lazing on the beach or partaking in the activities included in the daily rate like snorkelling, boat tours, hiking and star gazing. On the main island, guests will also find a spa, open-air cinema and a number of restaurants.

Located in the vibrant and high end Stockholm neighbourhood of Östermalmstorg, Hotel Villa Dagmar will feature 70 stunning rooms and suites. Sister to the much-loved Hotel Diplomat, Villa Dagmar will have the Östermalmshallen food hall integrated into the hotel. Guests will also discover a spa, flower shop and a restaurant. Stay tuned.

Opening at the start of 2020, ME Dubai is situated in the striking Opus building in the heart of the up-and-coming Burj Khalifa district. Set to be an architectural icon in the Dubai skyline, it was designed by the late Zaha Hadid who designed both the exteriors and interiors to make her vision of interconnectedness come to fruition. With 132 guest rooms and suites, along with 39 serviced apartments, a rooftop bar, wellness centre and an award-winning Japanese restaurant, ME Dubai is the place to be seen in 2020.

Throwing open its doors at the start of 2020, Meliá Saïdia Residences will be a destination hotel for those who want to escape for a weekend. Located near Saïdia village, also known as ‘the Blue Pearl’, Oujda and Fez are also close by. Housing 192 apartments, suites and rooms, all with Moroccan décor, this all-inclusive hotel will have extensive facilities including a swimming pool, gardens, golf course and a marina where guests can partake in a range of water sports.

Two new Raffles properties are set two open in on-trend destinations: India and Bali. Raffles Udaipur will be the first Raffles for India. A palatial hotel which occupies its own private island in the middle of Udai Sagar Lake. A luxe 1,100 square metre spa will be found here alongside 101 luxury suites, a rooftop restaurant, swimming pool and sprawling gardens.
Raffles Bali will be located in Jimbaran Bay, perched on a hill with stunning ocean views. Each of the 32 villas will have its own private pool, and the property will be spread over 23 hectares, with a sprawling spa and restaurant.

Opening on London’s Buckingham Gate, The Guardsman is set to be a new luxury hotel with just 53 rooms. Promising to offer the ‘atmosphere, discretion and personal service usually associated with a private members club’, each of the individually designed rooms is unmistakably British with added touches like custom made furnishings and free standing bath tubs. The restaurant will be open to residents and guests only, with menus developed daily from seasonal produce selected from London markets and organic farms.

Just in case you needed another reason to visit the Maldives in 2020, ONYX Hospitality Group is opening a new OZO hotel in the honeymooner’s paradise. The new 200-villa private island resort will occupy the Raa Atoll and feature 60 over-water villas and 140 villas on the beach. Many villas will offer private plunge pools, while the resort will also have a strong focus on sustainability.
